What it is: cleaning cast into the concrete

A network of retractable nozzles is cast directly into the gunite shell during construction -- floor, steps, benches, tanning ledge, spa. A distribution valve at the equipment pad sequences banks of nozzles: they rise flush from the finish, sweep high-velocity water parallel to the floor, and retract invisibly when done. Debris is driven into high-flow, VGB-compliant safety drains and a hidden pre-filtration canister before it can ever reach the pump. The technology is a mature science refined over sixty years -- born when a 1950s pool serviceman dropped a running garden hose into his pool, answered the phone, and returned to find the floor swept clean -- and today it runs on precision spring-retracted nozzles indexed 20 to 30 degrees per cycle for complete coverage, sequenced electronically at whisper-quiet variable-speed pump levels.

Warm water is less dense, so it stratifies at the surface -- exactly where evaporation sheds heat and chemicals fastest -- while a cold, stagnant layer sits at the floor.

Engineered for Northeast realities

The leaf and acorn challenge. Our region's mature oaks, maples, and birches drop heavy autumn debris that overwhelms standard skimmers. We pair the floor nozzles with two safeguards: sumpless, VGB-compliant high-flow safety drains whose beveled channel design draws leaves and twigs inward in a gentle vortex without suction-entrapment risk, and a high-capacity pre-filtration debris canister that traps heavy organic material before it can reach the pump basket -- protecting the variable-speed pump from cavitation.

Automatic safety cover harmony. Most luxury pools in Greenwich, Bedford, and Scarsdale run automatic safety covers. Robotic vacuum cords snag covers; flush-mounted nozzles cannot. The system cleans while the cover is fully closed -- and immediately captures the fine dust and pollen a cover sheds as it opens.

Freeze-thaw protection. Northeast winters demand rigorous winterization: the valve's internal gear module is removed via a single band clamp and stored indoors; each subterranean zone is blown out with high-volume air and secured with an airlock; the debris canister gets non-toxic propylene-glycol antifreeze and a weighted expansion jug that absorbs ice expansion. Properly closed, the system is engineered to last the lifespan of the shell.

Built in at the gunite phase -- by design

Nozzle banks and zone piping are cast into the concrete shell before gunite is shot, which is why true in-floor cleaning is a new-construction decision made at schematic design.
